Virtual: Ways to Have a Green Holiday Season For Families

Join Sarah Robertson-Barnes on Monday, October 7 at 7PM via Zoom for suggestions on how to lower your ecological footprint this holiday season. This is a great discussion for whether you have kids of your own, kids in your life, or love being a kid yourself during the holidays!

Embracing the rhythms of winter is key to creating eco-conscious holiday traditions. Rather than getting carried away by the holiday rush, use this time as an opportunity to create the kind of holiday season you truly want – one focused on the magic of family and togetherness instead of stuff. A low waste holiday season is possible.

Sarah Robertson-Barnes, founder of the Sustainable in the Suburbs blog, is a freelance writer, educator, and consultant. She lives with her husband, two kids, and rescue dog outside of Toronto, Ontario. Sustainable in the Suburbs is a resource for living low waste with kids in a culture of convenience.

Register directly on Zoom HEREThis virtual event is a collaboration between several libraries.

RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program.

Author Jessica DuLong – Saturday, October 5 at 10:30AM

The Friends of the Georgetown Peabody Library will be hosting Jessica DuLong for an author talk and book signing at 10:30AM. Don’t miss out on the chance to win exciting door prizes! Refreshments will be served.

The Friends will also hold a brief business meeting at 10AM in which amendments to their Constitution and Bylaws will be voted on as well as the election of new officers and directors.

Jessica DuLong (a Georgetown native) is a journalist and historian — and one of the world’s only female fireboat engineers. Her book Saved at the Seawall: Stories from the September 11 Boat Lift chronicles the dramatic multi-boat rescue effort that delivered nearly half a million people to safety on 9/11. The definitive history of the world’s largest waterborne evacuation, Saved at the Seawall was featured in Spike Lee’s docuseries NYC Epicenters. Now based in Brooklyn, DuLong lectures internationally about narrative craft and journalism. Her memoir My River Chronicles explores history and her experiences as a marine engineer aboard a Hudson River fireboat to celebrate the vanishing value of hands-on work.
