The Georgetown Peabody Library is pleased to host an art exhibit by Mary Carvill for the months of July and August.

Artist Statement:

I grew up loving trees, nature, and creating things. Taking walks with my dad near his home in Gloucester felt warm and wonderful.

I moved around New England a lot with my mom, stepdad, and three of my siblings. Drawing took hold of me after winning 1st prize in first grade with a tree painting my mom helped me with. I poured myself into creating, especially self portraits, through high school and art college at SU, experimenting with different materials, including making a full size cloth figure of my brother Patrick who I lost when I was 10. I was trying to express feelings that I couldn’t, seeking to feel, communicate, and connect.

My stepdad was an alcoholic; my mom introduced me to Al-Anon, which helped me greatly with my anxiety throughout college. After college, I met and married my husband, became an optician, and had two sons. I still wrestled with suppressed feelings, shame, and anxiety. We found a church, or it found us, and I found God, who pulled me out of this pit. I wrote, sang, painted, created, and healed. Now I embrace and love life – God, my family, others, creating, and making eyeglasses part-time nearby.
