Kitty Café – Saturday, April 13 at 10AM

The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society will be here on Saturday, April 13 from 10AM to 11:30AM with some cute cats and kittens. Join us for a morning of pets, cuddles, and general cat admiration. Meet some adoptable cats and get answers to all of your kitty questions. Cats… books… what better way to spend your Saturday morning?

This is a drop in event, not a lecture. Please note that this is not an adoption event. People wishing to adopt will need to go through the process outlined on the MRFRS website or call MRFRS at 978-462-0760. 

Coffee Cupping – Saturday, April 20 at 10AM

Calling all caffeine fiends! Join Rob Fitzgibbon on Saturday, April 20 at 10AM as he teaches the art of coffee cupping; the practice of observing the taste and aroma of brewed coffee. Sample and savor various, freshly brewed roasts and learn how and why body, flavor, and aftertaste differ by coffee-growing region.

Virtual Author Talk: Brendan Slocumb

Join author Brendan Slocumb on Sunday, March 24 at 4PM via Zoom as he discusses his latest novel, Symphony of Secrets.

About the Author: Brendan Nicholaus Slocumb was raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and holds a degree in music education (with concentrations in violin and viola) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. For more than twenty years he has been a public and private school music educator and has performed with orchestras throughout the Northeast. He lives in Washington, D.C.

Seed Library

Knock on Wood Concert

Join us on Tuesday, March 26 at 6:30PM to listen to Knock on Wood, a high-energy acoustic folk-rock duo, featuring singer-songwriter Howie Newman. Combining acoustic guitar with fiddle, mandolin and pleasing vocal harmonies, the duo performs funny original music (suitable for all ages) and Classic Rock covers. It’s a very lively, fun show with great musicianship, humor and lots of audience participation.

Women’s Self Defense Class – Saturday, March 23

Join John Kotch, a black belt instructor originally trained in Isshin-Ryu Karate, on Saturday, March 23 from 10AM to 12PM. The instruction will include techniques used by various martial arts styles, military and law enforcement for the singular purpose of personal, self-defense. The following will be covered: improving self-awareness; hand and foot techniques; hold-breaks, ground techniques and basic weapons defense.

This is an active participation activity so please dress appropriately. Participants may choose to just observe if so desired.

Please Note: High School students are permitted to attend, but must sign a waiver if under 18 years of age. Click here for the waiver form.

Minute Madness 2024

UPDATE: We had a tough competitor with Wilmington and unfortunately, we are not heading to the Championship. Great job to everyone who signed up for this challenge and logged their minutes. We had a total of 127 people read 145,326 minutes! There’s always next year!

It’s tournament time! Can you help us out-read other Massachusetts libraries? Log your reading as we fight for a spot in the Minute Madness final in March.

Please note, if you participated in this program last year through Beanstack you do not need to create a new account! Use the same one as last year. If you need help, check out this Beanstack Cheat Sheet or email Sarah at scognata@georgetownpl.org.

Round 1: (March 1- March 7) This week will be a “free for all” – all libraries will compete and the 16 libraries with the most minutes logged by 2pm on Thursday, March 7 will land a spot on the bracket. We will use the rankings from this week to seed the bracket for Week 2 (#1 vs. #16, #2 vs. #15, #3 vs. #14, and so on).

Round 2: (March 7- March 14) 16 libraries will compete in a bracket-style tournament. (For the less sporty amongst us – this means your library will be playing head-to-head against one other library. The winner moves forward to the next round).

Round 3: (March 14- 21) 8 libraries will compete in a bracket-style tournament. 4 libraries will proceed to the “Fierce Four”

Fierce Four: (March 21- 28) 4 libraries compete in a bracket-style tournament for the chance to compete in the Championship round.

Championship: (March 28 – April 4) the top two libraries compete for victory!

Books, audiobooks, graphic novels, magazines and newspapers all count towards our total.

Would you rather participate through a paper sheet? No problem! A paper log is available for pickup at the Circulation and Children’s Desks. Please make sure to bring the sheet back to the library before the end of each round so your minutes can be counted!

2024 Friends Spring Book Sale

The Friends of the Georgetown Peabody Library will be having their Annual Spring Book Sale starting Thursday, March 14 through Sunday, March 17. 

Thursday, March 14 from 10 AM to 5 PM

Friday, March 15 from 10 AM to 5 PM

Saturday, March 16 from 9 AM to 1 PM 

Sunday, March 17 from 1 PM to 4 PM – Bag Sale! $5 to fill a bag

Proceeds from the book sale benefit library programs and museum passes. 

Donations may be brought into the library starting on Wednesday, March 6 to Wednesday, March 13 during library hours. Donations can include books, DVDs, CDs, puzzles, board games, audiobooks. They must all be gently used and free from mold. Ask yourself would you be willing to give this to a family member or friend before you decide to donate to the library.

Virtual: Lessons from Nature on Life & Death

Her talk will be illustrated with her striking photos of the alluring Maine coast. Patlak’s emotionally compelling presentation will be followed by an opportunity for questions, comments, and discussion.
